Just a Hint of Spice…

One road block I constantly run into in this line of work is captions and making them stand out. I write every day for this blog and because its long form, I can write as much as I need to write to say what needs to be said. Captions on my post however are another matter entirely. Today’s blog is going to cover some tips to spice up your captions for social media to help them stand out among the crowd. A good caption is the key to engagement and engagement equals more fans.

Four Ways to Spice It Up

Use vivid language

Instead of using bland, generic words, try to use more descriptive and evocative language. For example, instead of saying “The food was good,” you could say “The food was absolutely delectable and bursting with flavor.” Obviously we’re not writing food blogs over here- well, I am but thats not the point- using language that is more descriptive, regardless of your topic, is going to help your captions stand out more. Just be careful to keep your captions well within community guideline standard.

Use Analogies and Metaphors

Analogies and metaphors are a great way to make your content more interesting and memorable. For example, instead of saying “The company is growing rapidly,” you could say “The company is growing like a weed.” As content creators, this is something we need to do a lot and it helps to get creative with it. And this applies not only to our social media postings but anything we do on our fan platforms as well. Metaphors especially help us spice up our captions for our content. I’m thinking along the lines of “Let this bunny HOP on your … this easter 😈”

Tell a Story

People love stories, so try to incorporate them into your content whenever possible. Whether it’s a personal anecdote or a case study about a successful business, stories can make your content more engaging and relatable. This is useful for both your social media and your fan platforms. One ways to engage your followers on social media is to tell a story with your postings. Tell a story that they will care about and want to engage with. Recently I’ve started sprinkling some pictures of trash on the beaches near my home in with my photos shoots on those same beaches. This is in part an effort to bring attention to the fact that even with all of the resources and information available today… people are still dumping their trash into the oceans that feed them… This has gained a lot of attention on my socials and shows people that I am in fact a person that cares about more than just my fan platforms.

Add Humor

Humor can be a great way to liven up your content and make it more entertaining. Just be sure to keep it appropriate and in line with your brand’s voice. Try to throw in jokes that align with the content you’re posting. It’s a great way to humanize your content and engage with your audience. People always love a good laugh and nothing engages people more than a hearty chuckle. Twitter is a great place for this as you can pepper in stories, jokes and general shit posting throughout your feed without it feeling forced. Just make sure your jokes are not at another persons expense. Keep it classy.
